How does a stronger dollar affect my portfolio?

A market question puts a portfolio next to what the markets did — an index, a sector, a period. The comparison only means anything when both sides are measured over the same dates and in the same currency.

Worked through on a sample portfolio. The figures below are that portfolio’s, not yours.

A stronger US dollar affects your portfolio mainly through the parts priced in USD and any assets that move with USD strength. Here are the key ways it shows up for your portfolio:

  • Currency exposure

    • Your USD exposure is 20.721,48 € (22,77% of the portfolio). A stronger dollar raises the euro value of those USD-denominated holdings when converted to EUR.
  • Direct holdings priced in USD

    • Your largest USD exposures include Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. (both shown in the holdings list). Their market values are counted in EUR already, so stronger USD would increase their EUR values all else equal.
  • Crypto and commodities

    • Crypto (7.835,60 €, 8,61%) is often quoted in USD; a stronger dollar can lower EUR prices of crypto if crypto stays fixed in USD terms, reducing their EUR value. Precious metal (4.575,79 €, 5,03%) also often trades in USD and may move inversely to USD strength.
  • Cash and hedging

    • You hold 5.510,23 € in cash (6,06%). If that cash is in EUR, a stronger dollar increases the EUR value of any future USD proceeds you convert, and decreases EUR purchasing power of USD-priced goods.
  • Overall portfolio effect

    • Your portfolio has 45.974,84 € in EUR (50,53%) and 20.721,48 € in USD (22,77%). A stronger USD tends to raise the EUR value of the USD portion and can lower the EUR value of USD-priced crypto and commodities depending on their USD price moves.

Notes and mechanics

  • Currency moves change reported EUR values without any trading — gains or losses from FX appear as valuation changes across USD-priced assets.
  • Different assets react differently: equities listed in USD benefit in EUR terms, while assets whose USD price falls when the dollar strengthens (some commodities, crypto) may offset that effect.

If you want, I can run a scenario showing how a uniform +5% USD appreciation versus EUR would change your portfolio value and major holdings.
