What is my exposure to emerging markets?

An allocation question asks how a portfolio is divided — by asset class, sector, region or currency. What counts is the weight of each slice against the total, and the look-through into funds: an ETF is not one holding but hundreds.

Worked through on a sample portfolio. The figures below are that portfolio’s, not yours.

Your exposure to emerging markets can be read two ways in your data: by explicit Emerging Market holdings and by the MSCI EM index exposure tracked in ETFs.

Table showing the direct EM item and the EM index weight from your portfolio:

AssetValue (EUR)Weight (%)
iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF USD (Acc)3.561,38 €3,91%
MSCI EM index (portfolio allocation)3.561,38 €3,91%

What this means

  • The EM index exposure in your portfolio is 3,91% of the portfolio, worth 3.561,38 €.
  • If you want broader EM exposure that may be embedded inside global ETFs (for example iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF), those are counted under their ETF allocations rather than labelled “EM” directly; the explicit EM line above is the direct EM allocation.
