How did I perform relative to my benchmark this year?

A performance question asks what a portfolio has actually returned. The answer keeps the money you paid in apart from the money the investments made, which is why a time-weighted and a money-weighted return can differ so much on the same account.

Worked through on a sample portfolio. The figures below are that portfolio’s, not yours.

For 01/01/2026–10/09/2026 I compare your portfolio to the HSBC MSCI World UCITS ETF (IE00B4X9L533).

PeriodPortfolio total return (TWR, %)Benchmark return (%)Excess return (percentage points)
01/01/2026 to 10/09/20265,2811,16-5,88

This means your portfolio returned +5,28% by time-weighted return in this period, while the benchmark returned 11,16%, so your portfolio underperformed by -5,88 percentage points.

Notes:

  • The table uses time-weighted return for the portfolio and the benchmark return as provided.
  • The comparison covers 01/01/2026–10/09/2026 and reflects market and cash movements (not individual trades).
