What if I had simply held my sold positions?
A transaction question asks what was bought, sold or paid, and when. The answer reads the transaction history itself, which is also what every other figure on this site is ultimately built from.
Worked through on a sample portfolio. The figures below are that portfolio’s, not yours.
You asked what would have happened if you had simply held your sold positions. Here are the two realized sells in your trade history and what they would be worth today if kept instead of sold.
| Asset | Sell date | Quantity | Proceeds (€) | Cost basis (€) | Realized gain (€) | Value if still held (€) | Gain forgone by selling (€) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF | 24/03/2025 | 50,0000 | 4.945,50 | 3.949,72 | +995,78 | 6.272,75 | +1.327,25 |
| iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF | 14/05/2024 | 50,0000 | 4.565,50 | 3.776,35 | +789,15 | 6.272,75 | +1.707,25 |
Interpretation: the table uses each trade’s recorded proceeds, cost basis and realized gain, and the recorded “value if still held” and “gain forgone by selling” from your trade history. Both sales were of the same ETF and, in this scenario, each 50-share lot would be worth 6.272,75 € today rather than the cash you received when selling — meaning you gave up the additional gains shown in the last column.
